St Gall Itungwa as we know it today came into existence in the 1925.
THE NAME; The name "Gall' was given as a patron Saint by an Irish priest, Rev
Fr. Eugene Graotz of great memory.
FOUNDATION MEMBERS: The idea of this kind of Church was thrown in by one
Late Mr. James Nkwegbu Nabe of Oparachi kindred Itungwa 11. He was then
living at Amaku with his aunt and attended the Church at Amari where he got his
faith as a Catholic, When he came back home, he talked to people he met about
Catholic Church. He then convinced few people to establish the Catholic Church
at home. These pioneer members were:
l. Philip Udo a stranger from Akwa Ibom
li. Denis Ujo Onwulali
lii. Francis Nnorurn Onwulali of Uzo Itu.
IV. Joseph Nwamaghioha
V. Nwogu Aruma, a stranger living at Umuahara
Vi. John NwosuNnabe
Vii. Emmauel Jiocha.
It is of note that Francis Nnorum Onwulali among the list was the first
Christian to be wedded with his wife at C.K.C. Aba. Later the Church grew from
seven members to sixteen, this include Nwakanma Erondu of Umuotutu,
Syvester Ahaiwe, Oke Nkuma, Vincent Ebere, Clement Amuta, Mathias

own faith at Umuezi where he was then living and later Gordian Iheacho of
Umuotutu who studied under Vincent Ebere.
Many of them went on local pilgrimage to Amari living their months to study
catechism while building there faith. When finally came home, they pleaded with
one Mr. Olelewe Nwosu who gave a little piece of land at Ngwaokahia where they
started the Church. This time, their first teacher was Alfred Okpaji of Amiri. He was
sent and paid by the Catholic Community of Amiri,
In 1926 Rev. Fr. Eugene Graotz directed Rev. Fr. Delly to establish a
school at Itungwa for the learning development of the Church. This arose the need
for a larger site. An appeal was then made with one Mr. Nwanjoku Anyanwu of
Oparachi who by the Grace of God gave them the present site for the Church and
school. Amiri Catholic Community came to their aid and build a strong mud
house. In 1927 the Church and the school was transferred to the present site. The
second teacher Mr. Francis Amadi was then posted to the station by Rev. Fr. Delly.
